What is a B Corp and why are we one?

In January 2017, The Sponge became a certified B Corp and we couldn’t have been more excited. We were finally part of something awesome!

 

What even is a B Corp?

Why all the fuss for a certification? To understand this, let’s delve a little into exactly what a B Corp is. 

In it’s short form, a Certified B Corp is a business that uses business as a force for good. To earn a certification your business needs to meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability. This is to show that your business is actively trying to balance profit and purpose. 

The overall goal that B Corp’s strive towards is to accelerate a global culture shift in order to redefine success in business towards building a more inclusive and sustainable economy. 

 

Why did The Sponge become a B Corp?

At The Sponge, we’re all about perpetuating goodness and helping to change the world one business at a time. You may have heard us share that our purpose is to help all brands be good for the world. 

This desire and drive to change the world is what inspired our Founder, Luke Faccini to start working on a mobile app project to make the world a better place. 

Unfortunately, he felt alone in his quest until a friend of his introduced him to B Corporations and the rest is history!

Because there is something amazing about birds of a feather flocking together. When one person works on something alone, it is great! But when you have a group of people who perceive business in a similar way with a similar drive to better the world, the united impact is awesome. 

Not to mention the above qualities exuded by B Corps are something that are lived and breathed by every member of The Sponge team. It was such an easy decision to be a part of this! 

Society’s most challenging issues cannot be solved by the government and nonprofits alone. This is why The Sponge is dedicated and honoured to be a B Corp. And proud to be working with other B Corps to reduce inequality, poverty and create a healthier environment, a stronger community and more jobs with dignity and purpose. 

Being a B Corp is so much more than a certification. It shows our love and commitment to making the world a better place. Which is why we choose to only work with clients that are socially responsible, ethical and environmentally sustainable, who have a positive impact! And those who have the intent to become such a business! (Because that is the journey we go on). This is one way we deliver our purpose of helping all brands be good for the world, while balancing profit with purpose. 

It’s been an amazing ride so far and we can’t wait to see what the future holds and what B Corps can do.
